Jonathan's Story

Automatic admission to any state university in Texas awaited Jonathan Rodriguez after he graduated in the top 10 percent of his class at Newman Smith High School in Carrollton.

He wanted a college with a good academic reputation where he could also thrive outside the classroom, one that was close to home — but not too close. He found all these things at UT Arlington.

After choosing to join the Maverick family, Jonathan had to figure out how to pay for his education. “Affordability was a concern until I found out how much the state and federal government could help out,” he said.

He received grants that paid for tuition, fees and books. Loans covered the cost of living on campus in Brazos House, where he was actively involved in the residence hall’s governing council. His work-study job in the financial aid office provided cash for living expenses.

The second member of his family to attend college, Jonathan graduated in four and a half years with a degree in advertising. “My entire college education was paid for by grants, scholarships and loans,” he said.

Now, as a financial aid counselor, he’s helping other UT Arlington students find the means to pay for their college educations.
