JaVaun's Story

JaVaun Roland made good grades at Justin F. Kimball High School in Dallas but almost missed out on going to college because she didn’t know how to sign up for college placement exams or fill out scholarship applications.

“I really didn’t have any help until I took advanced placement classes in high school,” said JaVaun, 20, an education major at The University of Texas at Austin.

As the idea of getting a college education became closer to a reality, JaVaun became increasingly motivated to excel in high school, where she was a member of student council and secretary of her senior class. But another reality was that her family had no money for her college education.

With 10 children to support, her schoolteacher mother and her stepfather couldn’t afford to send her to a university. Although she qualified for a scholarship, JaVaun was still about $6,000 short. That problem, however, was overcome when she obtained a Stafford loan that helped pay for her freshman year at the university.

Although JaVaun left the university after completing her freshman year to have a baby, she moved back last summer to return to the campus and continue her studies.

Her goal is to earn a master’s degree in business administration and later open a school of arts for low-income students. “Now I want to help students who also cannot afford it,” JaVaun said. “This is just my way of giving back to the community.”
