Demitrius's Story
Demitrius Davis traded his wings for hoop dreams. After a stint in the U.S. Air Force, he signed as a shooting guard for the UT Permian Basin Falcons' basketball team.
In conference play, Demitrius averages 11.3 points and four rebounds per game. He makes about 65 percent of his free throws, too. But basketball prowess aside, there was a more pressing off-court enticement that drew him to the West Texas university.
“I chose UTPB because I could play basketball and because of its excellent kinesiology program,” Demitrius said. “I want to be a college basketball coach one day.”
Because he graduated in the top half of his high school class in Killeen and comes from a family with an income of less than $25,000, he qualified for the UTPB Promise Scholarship, which pays his tuition and fees in full. A small loan helps him pay for books and housing in the UTPB student apartments.
“Going through the Office of Financial Aid helped me a lot. I was able to qualify for two scholarships and received two grants as well,” said Demitrius, a senior.
Factoring in financial aid, scholarships and modest loans, Demitrius could complete his bachelor’s degree at UTPB with only minimal debt.
