Decision on Health Center Site Expected to be Deferred

AUSTIN - The Board of Regents of The University of Texas System will hear a consultant's report next week on a location for a regional academic health center in the Lower Rio Grande Valley but is expected to defer a decision on the site, Chancellor William H. Cunningham said Thursday (August 6).

In a letter to Valley officials and others, Cunningham wrote: "I anticipate that the Board will not select a site at the August meeting and that they will seek additional information before making a decision on this matter."

U.T. officials did not speculate on when a decision might be made. The regents will meet in executive session on Wednesday, August 12, to receive a report from Kaludis Consulting Group on site proposals submitted in July by the Lower Rio Grande Valley Academic Health Center Foundation.

The last session of the Legislature authorized the U.T. System to operate the new center in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, but left the site selection up to the regents.
