GERI HOCKFIELD MALANDRA is Vice Chancellor for Strategic Management for the fifteen-campus University of Texas System where, since 2002, she has led the development of the System's first comprehensive accountability and performance reports and its System-wide compact process. Her responsibilities include developing and managing the implementation of the Board’s strategic plan; aligning accountability with strategic planning; and creating System-wide global and leadership development initiatives. She also served in 2006-07 as executive vice chancellor ad interim for academic affairs.
She has presented testimony to the Texas legislature and speaks nationally on issues of accountability, performance measurement, and institutional improvement in higher education. She served as an advisor to the Secretary of Education's Commission on the Future of Higher Education and chaired the accreditation issues working group for the U.S. Department of Education Summit. Malandra is vice chairman of of the National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and Integrity, as well as a member of the NASULGC/AASCU Voluntary System of Accountability task force on core learning outcomes.
Originally a New Yorker, she attended high school in Chappaqua, New York, moving west to attend Carleton College and graduate school at the University of Minnesota. In the University of Minnesota administration, she held management and policy positions in the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Continuing Education, and the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost. She served as Associate Vice Provost, leading the development of Minnesota's first comprehensive accountability reporting system, and developing policy and legislative reports on issues related to accountability, accreditation, academic program review, and planning issues.
In the non-profit sector, she held the position of Assistant Director for Government and Public Affairs at the National Federation of State Humanities Councils, and has served on a number of volunteer boards.
Dr. Malandra was trained in anthropology and archaeology (B.A. Carleton College), in history, art history, and ancient languages (M. A. and Ph.D. in Ancient Studies, University of Minnesota), and conducted field research in India. Her academic publications include a monograph on Buddhist cave temples and numerous journal and encyclopedia articles. She was appointed adjunct assistant professor appointment in the Department of History at the University of Minnesota where she taught courses on the history of the ancient Near East and comparative world history.
