JANIS APTED

Janis Apted, MLS, is the Associate Vice President for Faculty Development at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.  She has worked in higher education, health care, and international development organizations in Canada, England, Switzerland, Tunisia and the U.S.
In her current position, Ms. Apted is responsible for the planning and implementation of a comprehensive faculty development program for 1500 research and clinical faculty.  Programming includes I*CARE (Interpersonal Communication and Relationship Enhancement for health care providers), Faculty Productivity and Organizing Services, Classrooms of the 21st Century teaching skills program, Faculty Health and Well-being, the Junior Faculty Development Program, Faculty Mentoring Initiative, and the Faculty Leadership Academy and related programs.   The purpose behind this programming is to provide opportunities for faculty talent to become fully engaged in their work and to flourish in their careers.
Ms. Apted is currently working on a project to improve the processes for identifying and developing emerging and current leaders to meet the needs of a dramatically changing health care landscape. 

NEAL E. ARMSTRONG

Neal E. Armstrong is Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin, a campus of over 51,000 students, 3,000 faculty, and 8,500 staff, with an annual budget of over $2 billion. He is also the Zarrow Centennial Professor in Engineering, Professor of Civil Engineering, a licensed Professional Engineer in Texas, and Board Certified Environmental Engineer of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers. His portfolio as Vice Provost includes finding ways to make the University a more welcoming, supportive, and informative place for faculty, enhancing the excellence of academic programs, spearheading institutional regional accreditation and accountability activities. In his role, Neal represents the University to the University of Texas System as a member of the System’s Leadership Institute Advisory Group and its Strategic Planning and Policy Research Group and to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board as a member of its Research/Emerging Research Peer Group. He serves as the Accreditation Liaison for the University with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and successfully led the University’s preparations for its 2008 accreditation. Neal also serves as chair of reaffirmation committees for on-campus visits to institutions. He is a trained facilitator and a certified train the trainer for Ford RAPIDs, a process improvement process and had facilitated a number of RAPIDs on the University’s campus.

In January 2010 Dr. Armstrong completed The Leadership ChallengeÒ Workshop and The Leadership ChallengeÒ Facilitator Training. He recently developed a Leadership Institute for the University of Texas at Austin which initially is focusing on leadership development in department chairs and is collaborating with the UT System Leadership Institute to develop and offer several programs. He has worked with the Institute to organize and offer a 2009 workshop on Strategy Mapping/Balanced Score Card which was attended by representatives from five academic and two health-related component campuses.


LILY T. GARCIA

Lily T. Garcia, DDS, MS, is Professor and Director, Division of Advanced Education & External Affairs, Department of Comprehensive Dentistry at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. Dr. Garcia is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and Fellow of the American College of Prosthodontists (ACP).  She is President-Elect of the ACP and on the Executive Council for the Academy of Prosthodontics.  She has published articles, abstracts, edited and co-authored several dental textbooks, and is a reviewer for several scientific journals.  She was a Fellow in the 2005-2006 Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program.  She maintains a practice limited to Prosthodontics.
