AVerage Net Academic Cost and Average Percent Discount

It is the policy of the UT System that no student be denied educational opportunity because of financial need, while at the same time ensuring that the educational services provided to students are of the highest quality.

UT's campuses set aside at least 20 percent of new tuition revenues for financial aid programs. There are a variety of ways to cut the costs of higher education ranging from flat tuition rates to off-hour classes. Federal and state programs - such as the "B-on-Time" loan forgiveness program - are also available.

Because of programs and incentives like these, students at UT campuses rarely pay the widely publicized sticker price for higher education.

1. Total academic costs represent the sum of all statutory tuition, designated tuition, and board-authorized tuition (where applicable), along with mandatory fees which now include college and course fees. Academic cost information is derived from actual fee bills for resident undergraduate students enrolled for 15 semester credit hours.
2. The average net cost for all full-time students is derived by subtracting the total need-based grant aid from the total academic costs of all students and dividing by the total number of students.
3. In 2006-07, a total of 7,897 students at U. T. Pan American received an average need-based grant of $8,662 resulting in $68,403,814 of aid. Likewise, 5,218 students at U. T. El Paso received an average need-based grant of $5,542 resulting in $28,918,156 of aid. Because the average need-based grant was larger than the average academic cost, only those grant funds used to cover the academic costs were included in this analysis for these two institutons.
