Adda's Story

Adda Mazariegos faced a financial challenge in pursuing a bachelor’s degree in interior design. At least until she heard about the Maverick Promise, through which students with a household income of $65,000 or less may receive free tuition and fees.

The Rowlett native, now a sophomore, qualified for the generous financial aid program. Eligible students also must qualify for a federal Pell Grant.

“It makes life easier for sure,” says Adda, who lives and works on campus. “I don’t depend on my parents anymore. I pay my taxes on my own. I work. I would have had to take on a lot of loans.”

Adda wants other students to know that help is out there, “but it’s not going to find you.”

“You have to do your research,” she says.

She researched universities and heard from alumni and professionals about the quality of UT Arlington’s interior design program.

With the Maverick Promise, Adda can focus on completing her degree and her long-term goal of working for an architecture firm and eventually owning her own interior design business.
