Salem's Story
Salem had already been accepted to a larger university, but something led her to UT Tyler, where she found her new home for the next four years.
“I had always been interested in the medical field, but I didn’t know if it would be as a doctor or a researcher. When I came to UT Tyler, everything just sort of fell into place toward the nursing program,” said Salem, who added that she’s always enjoyed working in service fields while in high school.
During her first two years at UT Tyler, Salem’s parents funded her education until her father lost his job.
“I didn’t know what to do, but I contacted the financial aid office and found out that I was eligible for scholarships. Once I started working in that office, I realized that there are numerous financial aid options available,” she said.
The financial aid assistance has helped Salem concentrate on her classes and clinicals, and she’s able to pursue other interests on campus. She’s a member of the Nursing Christian Fellowship and the Delta Gamma Sorority, from which she also received a scholarship.
“I wish everyone knew how easy the financial aid process is and that there are so many options.”
