JaVaun's Story

JaVaun Roland worked hard and made good grades at Justin F. Kimball High School in Dallas but had a tough time finding the right mix of sound advice and essential resources to get her college career on the right track.

“I always knew I was going to go to college, but I didn’t really have the help or the resources working in my favor,” said JaVaun, 20, a social work major at The University of Texas at Austin.

As the idea of getting a college education got closer to being a reality, JaVaun became increasingly motivated to excel in high school, where she took advanced placement classes, was a member of student council and secretary of her senior class. But another reality was that her family had limited finances for her college education.

Although she qualified for a scholarship, JaVaun was still about $6,000 short. That problem, however, was overcome when she obtained Stafford and Be-On-Time loans that helped pay for college.

After completing her freshman year, JaVaun left the university to have her son, Gabriel, but moved back last summer to return to campus and continue her studies. She’s now a junior.

Her goal is to complete her undergraduate degree in social work and then go to law school. “I want to have influence on the political system and bring more resources and opportunities to minority communities and schools,” JaVaun said. “This is just my way of giving back to the community.”
