Q & A with UT System Student Regent Ashley M. Purgason

Ashley M. Purgason is a graduate of The University of Texas at Arlington and is currently a doctoral student at UTMB Galveston . She conducts research at both UTMB and NASA on the dangers of the space radiation environment and its effect on the health of astronauts in long duration missions beyond low Earth orbit. Purgason has served as a Student Regent since June 2012. As her service on the UT System Board of Regents comes to a close at the end of May, she graciously agreed to answer some questions about her experience this past year.

UT Austin entrepreneur meets with President Obama

Chris Slaughter, a University of Texas at Austin graduate research assistant and student entrepreneur, has had quite a week.
First, he made a presentation to the UT System Board of Regents about his company, Lynx Laboratories, which is supported by the Longhorn Startup Program at UT Austin.
Then, Slaughter met with President Obama to talk about his company, which develops software for 3-D photography.

Update on UT System priorities for 83rd Legislative Session

Barry McBee, vice chancellor and chief governmental relations officer at The University of Texas System, gave an update to the Board of Regents on UT System’s priorities for the 83rd Legislative Session on May 9.
McBee said that significant progress has been made on numerous initiatives. However, he cautioned that with less than three weeks left in the session, many issues are still in play and in flux, so there is still much work to do.

University of Texas at El Paso student team Diego Capeletti, Eva Deemer and Alex Pastor were awarded $100,000 in seed funding for their company American Water Recycling (AWR) during the UT System Horizon Fund Student Investment Competition on May 2.

16 teams to compete for up to $100,000 in UT System Horizon Fund competition

On May 2, sixteen student teams from 10 University of Texas System institutions will compete in the UT System Horizon Fund Student Investment Competition for up to $100,000 in seed funding. The teams will present their business plan and idea to a high-profile group of venture capitalists, investors and industry experts who will judge the entries and award a winner from one of two categories: Information Technology or Biomedical/Engineering. The winning team will be announced during an award reception at the end of the day.

UTMB receives Employer of the Year from The Galveston County Daily News

The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston recently received the Employer of the Year award from The Galveston County Daily News.
This is the first year the newspaper has given the award, which recognizes the positive impact that stable jobs and the employers who provide them have on the local economy and the community in general.

UT El Paso celebrates 100th anniversary of university's establishment

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of The University of Texas at El Paso, university faculty, staff, alumni, students, and leaders gathered at the State Capitol on Tuesday.
UT El Paso began as a mining school on Sept. 23, 1914, and was later renamed Texas Western college and then The University of Texas at El Paso in 1967. The university will celebrate its centennial in 2014.

UT System Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa, M.D., delivered the Tomás Rivera Lecture during the national conference of the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education, March 28-30, in San Antonio. The lecture is presented every year by a national leader or distinguished scholar to honor the late Dr. Tomás Rivera—a professor, scholar, poet and former chancellor of the University of California, Riverside.
UT San Antonio President Ricardo Romo introduced the Chancellor, describing him as “a man of vision and innovation,” an individual who is “keen on implementation.”

UT Dallas chess team takes second place in national competition

The University of Texas at Dallas chess team finished second place for the third year in a row at the Final Four of College Chess in Washington, D.C., April 6-7.
Cristian Chirila, Valentin Yotov, Julio Sadorra, Salvijus Bercys, Milos Pavlovic and Conrad Holt competed against three teams from The University of Maryland, Baltimore County, The University of Illinois and Webster University, which took first place.

UTEP tops national rankings for producing Hispanic engineers

In 2012, The University of Texas at El Paso's College of Engineering graduated 10 doctoral, 102 master's and 230 undergraduate Hispanic-American engineering students, making UTEP the top producer of graduate-level Hispanic engineers in the nation and second in the nation for undergraduate Hispanic engineers.
