A new UT medical school is on its way! On Tuesday night, voters in Travis County gave an emphatic endorsement for a medical school at The University of Texas at Austin by approving Proposition 1, signaling their support for both a UT Austin school of medicine and creating an essential healthcare safety net in the Austin community.

In late August, as students were arriving on UT campuses across the state to begin the fall semester, I updated the Board of Regents – and the public – on our first full year of progress in implementing the Action Plan of the Framework for Advancing Excellence throughout the UT System.

As you know, the Action Plan is focused on nine overarching goals, including improving undergraduate student access and success, enhancing efficiencies and productivity, transforming medical education and much more. We are proud of the many advancements made over the past year at all 15 UT System institutions. We will continue to use the Action Plan as our guidepost to become the best among our national peers.

Last week, by unanimous vote, the Regents approved our partnership with three of the nation’s most prestigious universities – MIT, Harvard, and the University of California at Berkeley – in an online initiative that will enrich the educational experiences of our students, help them graduate on time, and lower the cost curve of a college education.

I take the opportunity to highlight three newsworthy items related to excellence within The University of Texas System. Over the past few weeks, several UT System institutions were recognized as being among the best in the United States and beyond, and a significant group of UT System faculty members were honored for teaching excellence by the Board of Regents.

U.S. News & World Report issued its annual “Best Hospitals” edition on Tuesday. I am thrilled to report UT MD Anderson remains the No. 1 hospital for cancer care in the country – a recognition it earned for the sixth year in a row, and the ninth time in the past 11 years – and several specialty programs at UT Southwestern Medical Center were recognized by the publication.  And, many specialty programs at our affiliated hospitals and institutes were cited by U.S. News, including Memorial Hermann – Texas Medical Center; The Texas Heart Institute; TIRR Memorial Hermann; Parkland Hospital; and San Antonio’s University Hospital.

Chancellor Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., Participates in White House Discussion about Cost Transparency

University of Texas System Chancellor Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., participated in a roundtable discussion at The White House about the transparency of college and university costs to students and their families. Cigarroa was one of ten leaders of colleges and universities invited to attend the event, which was hosted by Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Richard Cordray and Domestic Policy Council Director Cecilia Muñoz.

“I am honored to have had the opportunity to participate in a discussion about the importance of cost transparency with Vice President Biden, Education Secretary Duncan, senior White House officials and colleagues at other universities and colleges,” Cigarroa said. “Undergraduate student access and success is an integral part of my Framework for Advancing Excellence Across The University of Texas System, which the Board of Regents unanimously approved last August. Providing students and their families with clear and concise information regarding the cost to earn a college degree is a top priority for all our universities. The UT System already provides students with access to information regarding cost of attendance, financial aid options and net costs after grants and scholarships through a variety of communication mediums,” Cigarroa added.
