Core Curricula in Excess of 42 Semester Credit Hours

Purpose:

Process for submission of core curricula in excess of 42 semester credit hours to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board

Date Approved:

February 11, 1999 (Editorially amended September 2000)

Background:

In July 1998, the Coordinating Board adopted new rules requiring that core curricula in excess of 42 semester credit hours have prior approval of an institution's governing board before submission to the Coordinating Board.  The rules further require that the institution provide a narrative justifying the need of a larger core curriculum, that the larger core curriculum is consistent with the institution's role and mission, and that a proposed upper-division core course is not substantially comparable in content or depth of study to a lower-division course listed in the "Texas Common Course Numbering System."  To streamline this submission process, the Board authorized the following:

SUBMISSION OF CORE CURRICULA IN EXCESS
OF 42 SEMESTER CREDIT HOURS TO THE
COORDINATING BOARD

The Board delegated to the appropriate Executive Vice Chancellor:

a.                                           Authorization to review and approve on behalf of the U. T. Board of Regents all institutional core curricula in excess of 42 semester credit hours for The University of Texas System components

b.                                           Authorization to submit, on behalf of the component institutions and the U. T. Board of Regents, such core curricula to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for review and approval.
