Sections 61.539
and 61.910 of the Texas Education Code require that the governing board of
health institutions with medical and dental schools, respectively, set aside 2%
of tuition charges for resident students registered in these schools. Section 61.961 of the Texas Education
Code requires that the governing board of public universities set aside 1%
of tuition charges for resident law students. The amount set aside is to be transferred to the Texas Comptroller of
Public Accounts for the purpose of repayment of certain student loans made to
medical, dental, and law students. In
accordance therewith, the following action was taken:
The
U. T. Board of Regents authorized health institutions with medical schools
in the U. T. System to set aside 2% of tuition charges for resident
students registered in these schools. This amount is to be transferred to the Comptroller of Public Accounts
for the sole purpose of repayment or cancellation of student loans of
physicians serving in designated state agencies or economically depressed areas
of the State. This action is required
by Section 61.539 of the Texas
Education Code.
The Board authorized health
institutions with dental schools in The University of Texas System to set aside
2% of tuition charges for resident students registered in these schools for
certain loan repayments as required by Texas Education Code Section 61.190 enacted by the 76th Texas Legislature, Regular
Session, effective September 1, 1999. The U. T. System dental schools are located at The
University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and The University of
Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
The Board authorized The
University of Texas at Austin to set aside 1% of tuition charges for resident
law students for certain loan repayments as required by Texas Education Code Section 61.961 enacted by the 77th Texas Legislature, Regular
Session, effective September 1, 2001. To qualify for loan repayment, an attorney must enter into a
