THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS SYSTEM
ASSIGNABLE EDUCATIONAL AND GENERAL SPACE
AND CLASSROOM UTILIZATION:
EXPLANATION
The associated charts summarize the uses of building space operated and maintained
from appropriated funds. Auxiliary enterprise space (e.g., dormitories and cafeterias)
which is self-funded is not included.
Both the pie charts of total educational and general space and the bar charts for
classroom utilization are based on standard reports submitted by the institutions
to the Coordinating Board. Component institutions use more detailed information to
schedule classrooms each semester and to periodically reassign space to meet changing
needs. These campus information bases include data on room size, condition, and
location.
Classroom utilization reflects only the use for regularly scheduled classes during
a 70-hour week (8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Monday through Friday) which the Coordinating
Board uses as a standard. Classes are held at other times; e.g., 7:30 a.m. and on
Saturday. Also, some classes are scheduled into rooms designated for other purposes;
e.g., theaters, conference rooms, and laboratories. Unscheduled use for meetings,
special seminars, and individual or group study and scheduled use by other institutions
or outside groups is not reflected in the utilization statistics.
All space under the control of an institution is reflected in the utilization charts
including space at off-campus locations. An institution's ability to achieve
utilization rates at these locations comparable to the on-campus rates is obviously
limited by the number of classes scheduled in these locations.
