Office of the Chancellor

Welcome from the Chancellor

Welcome to The University of Texas System. Our 15 institutions make up one of the largest university systems in the country and produce some of the finest graduates in the world, all while conducting cutting-edge research and pioneering important breakthroughs in critical fields such as medicine, science and technology.

Serving as chancellor of the UT System is a privilege, a profound responsibility and a vitally important role centered on advancing humanity, our democracy and economic prosperity.

I am not only an academic, I am also a transplant surgeon, and I continue that work, performing transplants and seeing patients one weekend a month, in addition to my duties as chancellor. To me, the roles are similar, because I believe that - like medicine - education saves lives.

Established by the Texas Constitution in 1876, The University of Texas System now consists of nine universities and six health institutions spread across the great state of Texas. Serving 216,000 students, our institutions are national leaders in teaching, research, health care and public service. Each year we award nearly 46,000 degrees; provide care to nearly 6 million outpatients; account for 1.3 million hospital days of treatment; receive more than $2.5 billion in research funding; and produce $43 million in technology commercialization.

I invite you to explore our website for a closer look at who we are and the work we are doing every day to support and advance our 15 institutions of higher learning and to offer outstanding educational experiences and unlimited possibilities for every student.
