2009 Competitiveness Initiative Update

Chancellor Francisco G. Cigarroa deliverd the first progress report on the Competitiveness Initiative to the UT System Board of Regents on July 8, 2009.

The Competitiveness Initiative has given the UT System the wherewithal to recruit the world’s most outstanding faculty to educate our students, to provide us with outstanding healthcare, and to challenge the imagination of the scientists, engineers, mathematicians, healthcare providers, and, yes, students who will make the discoveries that change our lives for the better.

The presentation began with a short video message from Norm Augustine, retired chairman and CEO of Lockheed Martin Corp. and chairman of the National Academies committee that authored Rising Above the Gathering Storm.

During the presentation, the Board and the public heard from several faculty members and graduate students whose work is a direct result of the competitiveness initiative: Dr. Tinsley Oden, director of the Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences at UT Austin; Dr. Joe Takahashi, professor and chair of neuroscience at UT Southwestern Medical Center; Brandi Baird, a graduate student at the UT Health Science Center at Houston; Dr. Denise Park, the T. Boone Pickens Distinguished Chair in Clinical Brain Science and a UT Regents Scholar at UT Dallas; and Dr. Kristen Kennedy, a post-doctoral fellow at UT Dallas.
