IRVING “AL” BASSETT, JD, Senior Vice President, Strategic Management Systems, Inc. is a leading national expert on corporate compliance. He has taken the lead in the development of SMSInc's methodology for evaluating the effectiveness of corporate compliance programs, and he is the lead SMSInc consultant in managing and conducting compliance program evaluations. He has extensive experience in assisting health care organizations in the development, implementation and operation of compliance programs, as well as ongoing auditing and monitoring including compliance program evaluations. He is a specialist in corporate internal inquiries and investigations. Mr. Bassett is frequently called upon to provide seminars, focus group meetings, and educational programs relating to compliance programs and issues, including how to respond to government investigations/inquiries, as well as conducting compliance investigations.

Mr. Bassett served over 20 years with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in a variety of field and executive assignments. He was an expert on "White Collar" crime and government program fraud. He served as the FBI's Congressional liaison to four oversight committees, and he provided counsel to the Director of the FBI regarding Congressional issues. He directed/managed the drafting of all speeches/Congressional testimony for the FBI Director and conducted numerous briefings for the FBI Director, Members of Congress, and White House officials. Mr. Bassett also served as FBI Liaison to the Counsel/Deputy Counsel to the President and White House Office of Personnel Security.

He was appointed Assistant Inspector General for Investigations with the Office of Inspector General (OIG) for the United States Department of Labor (DOL) in 1990. In 1993, he was promoted to Deputy Inspector General, DOL overseeing enforcement of all DOL programs including ERISA, OSHA, labor health benefits, pension plans and the federal workers’ compensation program with a staff of 500 auditors and investigators. He also managed the Congressional Liaison activities for the OIG DOL and coordinated a major project for the President’s Council on Efficiency and Integrity.

Mr. Bassett’s private sector experience also includes providing security consulting services and conducting/managing internal investigations for numerous corporations.

He received his B.S. (Business Management) from the University of South Carolina and a Juris Doctor degree from Detroit College of Law. He is a graduate of the Senior Managers in Government Course, Harvard University and is licensed to practice law in the state of Michigan. He served as a Captain in the United States Marine Corps.
