Ms. Laurel Harvey

Laurel B. Harvey currently serves as the Chief Compliance Officer and General Manager for Administration and Compliance at Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey. She created and manages the University’s Compliance Program designed to prevent and detect violations of law, regulations and policy. This includes: promoting compliance awareness through publicity and training; implementing whistleblower hotline; evaluating compliance efforts from a risk perspective and developing projects to improve the control environment; and networking with peers to stay abreast of emerging issues and best practices. She also provides institutional support and oversight for the managers of academic departments and programs, a role she has filled since 2004. In that role, she improves efficiency of academic departmental administration through reorganization, staffing changes, and business process redesign with an emphasis on internal controls. His efforts include: developing standard job descriptions for departmental and business managers; recommending “best practices” for departmental internal financial controls; developing summary financial “dashboard” reports to keep faculty researchers connected to expense trends; and coordinating intensive management and financial review of academic departments at the request of the Provost and/or Dean of Faculty. She serves as a Member of the President’s Cabinet. Effective July 1st, her title will change to General Manager for Safety and Administration; she will assume responsibility for all campus safety, including the Department of Environmental Health and Safety and the Department of Public Safety and she will transfer compliance responsibilities to a newly created position, the Chief Audit and Compliance Officer, charged with overseeing Internal Audit and Compliance.

 

Laurel Harvey came to the University in 1981 as manager of planned giving. Five years later she became the associate director of investments and then the assistant vice president for finance and administration. In 1995 she was named associate treasurer and director of the Office of Risk Management. She was appointed general manager for administration in 2002 and added the duties of chief compliance officer in 2004. Her education includes a B.A., Economics, Middlebury College, Middlebury, Vermont, in 1977 and an M.B.A., Finance and Marketing, University of Rochester, Rochester, New York, in 1978. She is the Chair of the Board of the Mpala Research Trust that operates a field research station in Laikipia, Kenya, in partnership with The Smithsonian Institution, the Kenya Wildlife Service, the National Museum of Kenya, and the Mpala Wildlife Foundation.
