Edwin R. Sharpe became Vice Chancellor for Educational System Alignment, a new position at the UT System, in October 2002. He was named Vice Chancellor in 1998 and Executive Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs in 1999. Previously, he served as Vice President for Administration and Public Affairs at UT Austin from 1984 to 1998. From 1983 to 1984 he was Executive Director of the UT System Office of the Chancellor.

Sharpe held a variety of positions at UT Austin from 1974 to 1983, including Associate Vice President for Administrative Services, Assistant to the Vice President for Business Affairs, Assistant to the Vice President for Administrative Services, and Research Associate in the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs.

From January, 1992 until April, 1993, Dr. Sharpe served as Interim President of UT Permian Basin while continuing a part-time role as UT Austin's Vice President for Administrative and Public Affairs.

Dr. Sharpe, a native Texan, earned three degrees from the University of Texas at Austin, a bachelor's degree with honors in economics in 1969, an M.B.A. in 1970, and a Ph.D. in higher education administration in 1980. In addition to his involvement in a number of professional organizations, he has served in a variety of civic leadership positions in the Austin community.
