The Ashbel Smith Circle is a group of special friends of The University of Texas System who recognize the critical importance of strong and visionary leadership for higher education, Texas, and the UT System.
Ashbel Smith, the first President of The University of Texas Board of Regents, had a long and distinguished career in medicine, education, and public service. After moving to the newly formed Republic of Texas in 1837, he became a close friend of Sam Houston and championed the cause of public education for almost 50 years.
During his term on the Board of Regents, he was dedicated to recruiting the best faculty members available and to developing a curriculum befitting a "university of the first class." Dr. Smith became known as both the "father of Texas medicine" and the "father of The University of Texas." It is appropriate that individuals investing in UT System endowments in perpetuity be linked to Ashbel Smith's name.
Members of the Ashbel Smith Circle establish endowments, thereby ensuring that the Board of Regents can attract and retain the highest level of executive leadership for one of the largest public university systems in the United States. This sustained source of support also allows the Chancellor to invest energy and efforts in advancing the educational goals and priorities of the System. In addition, endowment income is used to advance the mission of the System through teaching excellence awards; special communications; and initiatives that enhance educational, clinical and research capabilities.
Donors who establish endowments at levels from $10,000 to $49,000 are known as Ashbel Smith Associates. Those establishing endowments, or who increase an existing endowment to the level of $50,000 or more are designated as Ashbel Smith Fellows. Commitments may be fulfilled over a five-year period.
