Dr.
James C. Guckian was named acting executive vice chancellor for health
affairs effective September 1, 2001. The executive vice chancellor for
health affairs reports to the chancellor and is directly responsible for
the health institutions of the System. The executive vice chancellor works
regularly with the chief administrative officers of the health components,
ensuring that the missions of the institutions are advanced and that appropriate
plans and programs are developed and implemented. There are six health
components: four are health science centers which offer a wide range of
degree programs and two are specialty tertiary hospitals with outpatient
clinical services. All are engaged in medical research, education, and
patient care.
Dr. Guckian joined the U.T. System in 1988 as executive associate for
health policy and planning. In 1997, he was appointed vice chancellor
for health affairs and currently serves as chairman of the Board of Directors
of the joint U.T. System-Texas Tech Health Sciences Center health maintenance
organization, Texas Universities Health Plan, and medical director of
the U.T. System Office of Healthcare Quality and Risk Management. From
1967 to 1988, Dr. Guckian held numerous faculty and administrative positions
at the U.T. Medical Branch at Galveston.
