About the Conference

The third University of Texas System Clinical Safety and Effectiveness Conference and Recognition Event will take place October 27 - 28 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in San Antonio, Texas.

Keynote speakers include Dr. David W. Bates, Chief, Division of General Internal Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Maureen Bisognano, President of CEO of Institute of Healthcare Improvement and Dr. David Nash, Dean, Jefferson School of Population Health at Thomas Jefferson University.

Dr. Bates is an internationally renowned expert in using information technology to improve clinical decision-making patient safety, quality-of-care, cost-effectiveness and outcomes assessment in medical practice. Maureen Bisagnano is a prominent authority on improving health care systems, a member of the Institute of Medicine and was appointed to The Commonwealth Fund's Commission on a High Performance Health System. Optional Wednesday preconference sessions include an Adaptive Leadership session lead by Dr. Valerie Ulstad. Adaptive Leadership helps map the territory of human behavior, describing what people do and how they behave in systems. More importantly it reveals what people can do with some deeper understanding of fear and resistance to change. Captain Patrick Browne will present a Wednesday session on Crew Resource Management (CRM), a procedure and training system that is incorporated into safety processes where human error can have devastating effects.

Abstracts will be solicited from graduates of the CS & E and ATP courses for poster professorial rounds and oral presentations. Thursday concludes with an awards dinner recognizing exceptional individuals and team improvement efforts with awards to top abstract submissions.
