University of Texas investigators are applying revolutionary new technologies
in biomedical research that will speed the process from discovery to treatment and prevention of
human disease. This symposium will feature leading investigators from Texas institutions using genetics, genomics/proteomics, molecular imaging and molecular therapeutics in translational research applications.

Genetics:
Applications of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and population genetics to Identify
disease risk/ susceptibility, or predict drug response. Session chairs are Margaret Spitz
from UT M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Dianna Milewicz from UT Health Science Center –
Houston and Sunil Ahuja from UT Health Science Center – San Antonio.
Functional genomics:
Applications of proteomics, or microarrays to identify expression patterns as predictors
of disease or response to therapy. Session chairs are Stephen Johnston of UT Southwestern
and Allan Brasier of UT Medical Branch.
Molecular imaging:
New methods and applications of noninvasive imaging of molecules or molecular events in
biologic systems. Session chairs are Juri Gelovani, UT M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and
Fred Bonte, UT Southwestern.
Molecular therapeutics:
Applications of gene therapy, development of biologicals and vaccines and small molecules/drug
discovery. Session chairs are Gordon Mills, UT M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Brent Iverson,
UT – Austin and Larry Stanberry, UT Medical Branch.
PLUS: Data blitzes (5 minute "rapid-fire" presentations); poster
