about the conference

The Academy of Medicine, Engineering and Science of Texas, in collaboration with The University of Texas System, is sponsoring Bugs, Drugs and Vaccines: Securing Our Future, April 5-6, 2006 at the Moody Gardens Hotel in Galveston, Texas. This mid-year meeting of the Academy will bring internationally recognized experts together with academic and industry-based scientists, postdoctoral fellows, and students from around the state of Texas to discuss cutting-edge advances in our understanding of the pathogenesis of a wide variety of viral, bacterial, and parasitic diseases and optimal approaches to their control.

The symposium is structured around three plenary sessions focusing on: new routes to pathogen discovery, new concepts of antimicrobial and antiviral drug therapy, and new approaches to vaccine development and immunization. Each session will be preceded by an internationally recognized keynote speaker and will be followed by presentations by investigators from Texas, many of them also with international reputations for excellence in their field. The first day will conclude with a reception and poster session providing an opportunity to enhance networking and allow symposium participants to present and discuss their latest research with their peers. Competitive travel awards are available to support the attendance of students and postdoctoral fellows who submit abstracts of posters to be presented at the symposium. The top poster winner in each of the focus areas will be given the opportunity to present their research findings orally during the symposium plenary sessions.

Poster Session

The Symposium will host a poster session which allows participants the opportunity for informal scientific interactions with colleagues. Posters will be presented during a reception at the conclusion of the first day of the symposium, Wednesday, April 5 at 4:45 p.m.

Abstracts submitted by March 17, 2006 by students and postdoctoral fellows residing outside of Galveston will be considered on a competitive basis for a travel honorarium covering the costs of accommodations during the meeting and travel up to $200. Tanox, Inc. has generously provided funds to make these travel grants possible. In addition, the top winner in each of the three major topic areas (pathogen discovery, antimicrobials/antivirals, and vaccines) will be given the opportunity to present his/her research orally during a plenary session of the symposium. All posters submitted (including from students and postdocs in Galveston) will be considered for the presentation slots.
