The University of Texas System: Innovations in Medical Education

VIDEO ARCHIVES FROM THE CONFERENCE

The first University of Texas conference on innovations in medical education was Oct. 21-22, 2004, at the Commons Center on the J.J. Pickle Research Campus of The University of Texas in Austin. The conference was organized by Dr. L. Maximilian Buja, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, as a major initiative of his appointment as the Chancellor's Health Fellow for Education for 2004-2005. Dr. Buja was assisted in the conference planning by a steering committee of leaders in medical education from the six health institutions of The University of Texas System.

The major theme of the conference was undergraduate medical education, i.e. the education of students in medical school leading to the award of the M.D. degree. A major focus of the conference was to bring together faculty from the UT health institutions to provide an opportunity to exchange information and to enhance future collaboration. The conference was, however, open to all those interested in medical education in the State of Texas. More than 70 participants attended, and included members of the UT health campuses as well as individuals from Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Baylor, staff from the Texas Medical Association and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

As a result of the conference, a Medical Education Working Group is being planned to lead the ongoing collaborative initiative in medical education. The working group, which will initially be comprised of UT System representatives, will explore sharing of resources through a variety of mechanisms. One of the primary focuses of this group will be to establish the conference on medical education as an annual event.
