Statement by William H. Cunningham, Chancellor |
| Statement
regarding Hopwood
Austin -- Based on the stay issued by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on this date, The University of Texas System will return to the admissions and financial aid policies that were in effect prior to the recent ruling issued by the 5th Circuit in the case of Hopwood v. State of Texas. We anticipate that these policies will be in effect at least until such time as the U.S. Supreme Court acts on the state's application for a writ of certiorari. We have been analyzing, and will continue to analyze, a number of options to determine how best to ensure that all of the people of Texas have an equal opportunity to attend U.T. System institutions. We await the final outcome of the Hopwood case and hope that the Supreme Court will use this occasion to provide guidance on these critical issues for institutions of higher education. |
