Ray Garza to Serve as U.T. System Advisor
AUSTIN - Ray Garza, a faculty member at The University of Texas at San Antonio and former provost of that institution, has been named a senior advisor to the U.T. System vice chancellor for academic affairs. Garza will serve in a part-time advisory role from July 1, 1998, through August 31, 1999, while also maintaining his current faculty position at UTSA.
"We are delighted that the U.T. System will have this opportunity to benefit from the advice and counsel of Dr. Garza. His experience and stature as a scholar and an academic leader place him in an excellent position to serve the System with great distinction," said Chancellor William H. Cunningham. Garza will work with Edwin R. Sharpe, vice chancellor for academic affairs.
"It will be my pleasure to work with Dr. Garza as the U.T. System and its component institutions move forward on a broad range of programs and policy issues designed to enhance the quality of the educational services that we deliver to the people of Texas," Sharpe said.
Sharpe said the U.T. System will benefit greatly from Garza's strong record on a number of issues including recruitment of highly talented minority and women faculty and strategies for achieving the U.T. System's goal of attracting a representative student body.
Garza said: "I am looking forward to working with Ed Sharpe on a variety of critically important academic issues impacting the entire U.T. System."
Garza served as provost at UTSA from 1992 to the spring of 1998. He is a professor of psychology.
Before coming to UTSA in 1991, he was a faculty member and administrator at the University of California at Riverside. He holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Texas A&I University (now Texas A&M University at Kingsville), and a Ph.D. from Purdue University. |
