Advisory Committee is Appointed for U.T. San Antonio Presidential Search

 

AUSTIN - An 18-member committee was announced Friday (Sept. 4) to advise the Board of Regents on the selection of a president for The University of Texas at San Antonio.

 

In accordance with the regents' rules, the committee will be asked to present names of candidates to the board, which will make the final decision.

 

The committee will search for possible successors to President Samuel A. Kirkpatrick, who announced in June that he plans to step down from the presidency by next summer.

 

The committee will be chaired by Dr. Edwin R. Sharpe, vice chancellor for academic affairs.

 

Other members of the committee, selected according to provisions of the regents' rules, are as follows:

 

• Three U.T. San Antonio faculty members, elected by the faculty: Dr. Jeanne Reesman, professor of English; Dr. Betty Travis, associate professor of mathematics; and Dr. Arturo Vega, associate professor of political science.

• Two U.T. San Antonio staff members: Evonn Hansen, a student development specialist at the University's Downtown Campus; and Karen Whitney, associate vice president for student affairs.

• Two U.T. San Antonio students, selected by the Student Government: Eric Denton, president of the Student Government; and Elizabeth Purkey, an undergraduate student from San Antonio.

• A representative of the U.T. San Antonio deans: Dr. James Gaertner, dean of the College of Business.

• The president of the UTSA Alumni Association, Ingrid Faris of San Antonio.

• The chancellor of the U.T. System: Dr. William H. Cunningham.

Board of Regents Chairman Donald L. Evans appointed the following members:

• Three representatives of the University's external community in San Antonio: Tom Frost, Heriberto "Berto" Guerra, and Aaronetta Pierce.

• Two members of the Board of Regents: Tom Loeffler of San Antonio and A.R. "Tony" Sanchez, Jr., of Laredo.

• Two presidents of U.T. System institutions: Dr. Juliet V. Garcia of U.T. Brownsville and Dr. Diana Natalicio of U.T. El Paso.
