Armando Diaz named associate vice chancellor

AUSTIN – Armando Diaz has been named associate vice chancellor for governmental and community relations in the University of Texas System. In that capacity, he will join the group of executive officers who serve as the chancellor’s chief advisers.

Diaz will coordinate the U.T. System’s new community affairs initiative, which will maintain communications with and explore collaborative projects with a variety of state and national civic, community-based, and professional organizations.

Diaz, who joined the U.T. System as a special assistant for governmental relations in 1991, was promoted shortly thereafter to assistant vice chancellor. As associate vice chancellor he will continue his governmental relations duties, but will report directly to Chancellor William H. Cunningham on matters relating to community relations.

Before his service with the U.T. System, Diaz was chief of staff to State Sen. Judith Zaffirini and former State Sen. Hector Uribe. Since 1974, he has served in a variety of technical and management positions in the executive branch of state and local government, including community-based organizations.

Diaz is a 1971 graduate of Pan American College (now U.T. Pan American). He earned a master’s degree in education from Antioch College in 1972.

A native of Santa Maria, Tx., Diaz graduated from La Feria High School. He and his wife, Elia, live in Austin.

With 15 campuses and more than 145,000 students, the U.T. System is the state’s largest system of universities.
