Tom Scott named associate vice chancellor AUSTIN Tom Scott has been named associate vice chancellor for governmental relations and planning in the University of Texas System. In that capacity, he will join the group of executive officers who serve as the chancellors chief advisers. Scott joined the U. T. System as an assistant vice chancellor for governmental relations in 1988. His duties include coordinating communications between the U. T. System and the Legislature on fiscal issues, appropriations, and other topics. Before his service with the U. T. System, Scott worked for 10 years in the office of former Lt. Gov. Bill Hobby, completing that tenure as Hobbys executive assistant. Previously, he was a chief examiner in the Governors Budget Office during the administrations of Gov. Preston Smith and Gov. Dolph Briscoe. Scott graduated from Richardson High School in 1965. He then earned two degrees from U. T. Arlington, a bachelor of arts degree in economics and a master of arts degree in urban affairs. Scott and his wife, Nancy, live in Bastrop, where he has been active in local government and community affairs. He has been a member of the Bastrop City Council and other local boards and commissions, and since May 1998 he has served as mayor of Bastrop. He is president of the Bastrop Economic Development Corp. and serves on the boards of the Friends of U. T. M. D. Andersons Science Park and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Committee in Bastrop. Scott is a member of the board of the U. T. Arlington Alumni Association. In 1995, he was recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus of U. T. Arlington. With 15 campuses and more than 145,000 students, the U. T. System is the states largest system of universities.
