UT System News Release

Charles Miller Elected Chairman of Board of Regents

Charles Miller, a member of the Board of Regents of The University of Texas System since 1999, was elected chairman of the board by his colleagues on Monday.

Miller, who is chairman of Meridian Advisors Ltd., an investment management company in Houston, has chaired the regents' Academic Affairs Committee. He was appointed to the Board of Regents by Gov. George W. Bush.

"I feel highly honored by this office, and I look forward to working with each of you," Miller said. "I know the board joins me in saying that we want to build on the work of Don Evans and the great contributions of Tom Loeffler."

Evans was chairman from 1997 until last January, when he resigned to become U.S. Secretary of Commerce. Loeffler, a member of the board since 1989, succeeded Evans as chairman.

The board also elected Rita C. Clements to serve as vice chairman to serve in place of the chairman. Two other vice chairmen were elected - A.W. "Dub" Riter, Jr. of Tyler and Raul R. Romero of Houston.

Monday's meeting of the board was held by telephone conference call. It was the first meeting for two new appointees, Cyndi Taylor Krier of San Antonio and Dr. Judith Craven of Houston.
