Texas Instruments News Conference

News conference to announce partnership/donation to UTD: $300 Million Earmarked for UTD
Under Texas Instruments-State Plan

Thank you, President Jenifer.

The announcement today by Texas Instruments marks the beginning of a new era of enhanced collaboration between the private and public sectors that will dramatically strengthen the quality and breadth of teaching and research in computer science, electrical engineering, and other fields, at U.T. Dallas. It will create major, long-term benefits for developing the state's high-tech workforce and diversifying its economy.

On behalf of the University of Texas System, I wish to extend my gratitude to the leaders of TI for their vision, their commitment, and their magnificent generosity.

I also express our deepest thanks to Governor Perry, Senator Hutchison, and other members of the leadership of our state for everything they have done to make this day possible.

Through this decision to expand its long-standing relationship with UTD, Texas Instruments has demonstrated once again why it is acknowledged as one of the nation's premier technology companies, a visionary innovator in public/private partnerships, and a model of corporate citizenship.

The new ventures announced today continue a tradition of more than one-third of a century at TI--a tradition of thoughtful, strategic investment in higher education and a tradition of bold thinking and a willingness to do things in new ways to meet our changing times.

The history of U.T. Dallas is intimately connected with TI and its legendary founders--a relationship that now gains new momentum and new energy.

For the University of Texas System, today's announcement also represents a very clear road map for the continued development and enhancement of universities. Particularly in an era of constraints on public resources, partnerships between public universities and private-sector companies will become more and more important. We remain alert to other opportunities for partnerships, across the U.T. System, based on the TI model here at U.T. Dallas. It is clear that Texas needs more comprehensive research universities of the highest quality, and we are committed to forging the partnerships that will make this possible. TI has shown the way, and for that we are deeply grateful.

Quote from U.T. Dallas President Franklin Jenifer:

“This partnership is the quintessential win-win-win – for The University of Texas at Dallas, for Texas Instruments and for the State of Texas. From UTD’s perspective, this is one of the most important developments in our 34-year history. It almost immediately will move us closer to our twin goals of being a top-tier research institution and having our Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science ranked among the top 50 engineering schools in the country. TI, which played a seminal role in the founding of UTD, once again has demonstrated its visionary corporate leadership and unwavering support for education.”
