Statement by Chancellor Mark G. Yudof: Tuition Setting of the University of Texas System
The University of Texas System has not set tuition for the current fiscal year or beyond. We delayed implementing any new tuition since the legislature turned decisions over to governing boards in June. The U.T. System Board of Regents will meet November 18 to consider tuition proposals submitted by System campuses.
The System has talked to all of the state's major policymakers and informed them of the process we are currently engaged in for setting tuition at our academic campuses and health institutions.
Since the law was changed, the U.T. System has engaged in the most thorough, comprehensive and transparent consultation process in the setting of tuition in the history of the state. Ours has been a highly public, highly consultative and inclusive process - one that involves more students, more accountability and more "results"-oriented tuition policies.
This process, which is still underway, has fully involved students in every stage. This has enabled students to take an informed, active role in the tuition-setting process, and in assuring the quality of their education. The Board of Regents is currently evaluating campus proposals to ensure that they result in improved graduation rates, better use of facilities, improvements in academic programs, enhanced access to institutions, and significant financial aid that enables low- and middle-income families to afford a high-quality education for their sons and daughters.
We are confident that when the U.T. System Board of Regents meets and considers proposals, that it will approve tuition plans that are reasonable, and affordable, and that meet the strategic needs of the state of Texas for providing the best education experience possible for students enrolled in our institutions.
We welcome the opportunity to discuss our tuition process with all policymakers, including the Joint Interim Higher Education oversight committee.
All of the proposals from U.T. System campuses are available for review at the U.T. System tuition website: www.utsystem.edu/news/tuition |
