Health center association recognizes Yudof for public service
AUSTIN - Mark G. Yudof, chancellor of the University of Texas System, has been honored by the Association of Academic Health Centers for leadership in public policy decision-making and commitment to public service.
Yudof received the John R. Hogness Award for 2003 at the association's annual meeting in Key Biscayne, Florida, on October 4. Hogness, currently president emeritus at the University of Washington, was president of the association from 1979 to 1988. The association represents more than 100 public and private academic health centers across the country.
In presenting the award, the association said, "Mr. Yudof is recognized for his steadfast dedication to the improvement of American higher education throughout his career as administrator, teacher, scholar, and public servant. Mr. Yudof has been noted for his visionary leadership, commitment to progress in higher education, and public policymaking to increase public understanding of educational issues and to improve access to institutions across the nation."
Yudof presented an address to the association on the crisis in financing of academic health centers, which are the nation's main institutions for the education of health professionals and for university-based medical research. Through their own or affiliated teaching hospitals, the institutions are also major providers of health care.
Yudof became the ninth chancellor of the U.T. System in August 2002. He came to the chancellor's office from the University of Minnesota, where he had served as president since July 1997. Previously, he was a faculty member and administrator at U.T. Austin for 26 years, serving as dean of the School of Law from 1984 to 1994 and as the university's executive vice president and provost from 1994 to 1997.
The U.T. System has 15 campuses, including nine academic and six health institutions, an enrollment exceeding 165,000 students, more than 80,000 employees and an annual operating budget of $7.8 billion. |
