Executive Vice Chancellor for Business Affairs is Appointed |
|
"Scott Kelley has all the qualifications that are fundamental to running the business affairs of a complex organization like the UT System: outstanding credentials and experience in a state university system that includes multiple academic and health institutions," said Chancellor Mark G. Yudof, who announced the appointment. "His service at West Virginia University demonstrates that he has a record of innovation with a solid foundation in business practices. We believe that Scott has the broad expertise we need in a chief business officer, and we are delighted that he has decided to join us in undertaking this key administrative role for the System."
Kelley officially begins his employment at UT System in his new capacity on July 19.
As executive vice chancellor for business affairs, Kelley will serve as the chief business officer for the UT System overseeing financial operations of the nine academic and six health institutions and System Administration. He will direct the preparation of short-term and long-range plans and budgets based upon UT System strategic goals and growth objectives; direct the organization and administration of procedures and systems necessary to maintain proper financial records and to provide adequate accounting controls and services; and direct and coordinate the establishment of the UT System total annual operating budget.
Kelley has served in his current position at WVU since 1995. From 1990 to 1995 he worked in several senior financial affairs positions with increasing responsibilities at the University of Toledo. Previously he worked on the audit staff at Harvard University and served as an assistant to the president at Middlesex Community College in Bedford, Mass. Kelley began his career in the treasury operations department at the Hertz Corporation in 1982.
Kelley earned a bachelor of science degree in economics from Brigham Young University, an MBA in finance from Oklahoma City University, and a master's degree and doctoral degree in higher education administration from Harvard University.
Kelley succeeds Kerry Kennedy who announced his resignation on August 12, 2003, to assume the position of vice president for financial affairs and treasurer at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Philip R. Aldridge has served as interim vice chancellor for business affairs since Kennedy's resignation and will resume his previous role as associate vice chancellor for finance for the System.
The UT System is the largest higher education system in the state and one of the largest in the U.S. The UT System has 15 campuses, including nine academic and six health institutions, an enrollment exceeding 177,000 students, more than 87,000 employees, and an annual operating budget of $7.8 billion (FY 2004). The UT System confers one-third of the state's undergraduate degrees and educates three-fourths of the state's health care professionals annually. |
