Education Secretary Spellings to Award Teacher Incentive Fund Grant to The University of Texas System in Dallas on May 31

DALLAS – U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings will present a Teacher Incentive Fund (TIF) grant to the University of Texas System on Thursday, May 31 at 2 p.m. at Audelia Creek Elementary School in Dallas. Secretary Spellings will be joined by Congressman Pete Sessions and University of Texas System Chancellor Mark G. Yudof.

The award to The University of Texas System is one of 18 grants being made in this round of the new Teacher Incentive Fund grant program. TIF is President Bush’s initiative to develop and implement performance-based teacher and principal compensation systems in high-need, disadvantaged schools, where at least 30 percent of students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. The goals of the program are to improve student achievement by rewarding effective principals and teachers, and, at the same time, increase the number of effective teachers serving minority and disadvantaged students.

Following a brief ceremony, officials will take reporters’ questions. News media wishing to participate in the media availability may do so in person at the Audelia Creek Elementary School, 12600 Audelia Road, in Dallas.
