Regents' Chairman Gene Powell on Mack Brown's Contract

The University of Texas System Board of Regents’ Chairman Gene Powell issued the following statement regarding the Board’s unanimous decision to extend UT Austin Head Men’s Football Coach William Mack Brown’s contract through Dec. 31, 2020.

"The Board of Regents is responsible for making broad policy decisions involving the institutions within The University of Texas System.  Decisions regarding campus operations and personnel matters are generally delegated to the institution presidents as outlined in the Regents’ Rules and Regulations.  Regents’ Rules on intercollegiate athletics specifically assign ultimate responsibility and authority for the operation, fiscal integrity, and personnel of the athletics program to the president. (see http://www.utsystem.edu/bor/rules/20000Series/20206.pdf). The Board’s role in review and approval of the contracts of head coaches is to assure appropriate oversight for the budget implications of proposed contract decisions.

The Board’s unanimous vote clearly reflects that the contract changes were determined to be in the best interest of UT Austin and the UT System.”
