Gene Powell and Francisco Cigarroa on the signing of Senate Bill 24

"We are so thrilled that Governor Perry has signed Senate Bill 24 and now the path is clear for us to embark on this mission to build a world-class university in South Texas. This is truly landmark and transformational legislation that will benefit all of Texas and the nation. We are incredibly thankful to all who have been supportive of this important initiative. The governor, the legislature, the faculty, staff and leadership of UT Brownsville [/Texas Southmost College] and UT Pan American and the entire Rio Grande Valley community has rallied around the South Texas Project and, like us, believe that this is a game-changer that will greatly expand academic and health professional education, research, technology transfer and commercialization efforts and economic opportunities that will impact generations of South Texans and, indeed, all of Texas.

"Building a new, PUF-eligible university with a medical school in South Texas is the right thing to do. We are proud and humbled to be a part of it and are excited to get to work to make this ambitious dream a reality.”
