Governor Perry to join UT System leaders in the Rio Grande Valley as they unveil plans for new university

Governor Rick Perry will join The University of Texas System Board of Regents Chairman Gene Powell and Chancellor Francisco G. Cigarroa on Tuesday, July 16, as they unveil plans for a new university in South Texas.

Governor Perry also will participate in ceremonial signings of the legislation that gives the UT System the authority to establish a new university that will be eligible for participation in the Permanent University Fund. The Texas Legislature passed Senate Bill 24 this spring, and it was signed into law by Governor Perry in June. The ceremonial signings represent an opportunity for state leaders to celebrate with the Rio Grande Valley community and announce new developments on this historic undertaking.

Chairman Powell and Chancellor Cigarroa will discuss next steps for the creation of the university, including timelines and guiding principles.

The ceremony at UT Pan American, hosted by President Robert Nelsen, will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the UTPA Student Union.  A reception and media availability will follow.

A second ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. in Brownsville, hosted by UT Brownsville President Juliet Garcia, at the TSC Arts Center with a reception and media availability to follow.

Both ceremonies will be webcast live on www.ProjectSouthTexas.com

Media Parking

At UT Pan American, members of the media can park in Lot A3, Zone 3 located in front of the Visitors Center/Student Services building.

At UT Brownsville, media parking is available in Lot A2 located on Taylor Street behind the Jacob Brown Auditorium.

El Gobernador Rick Perry se reunirá con el Jefe del Consejo de Regentes del Sistema de la Universidad de Texas, Gene Powell, y al Rector Francisco G. Cigarroa el martes 16 de julio para desvelar planes de la nueva universidad en el sur de Texas.

El Gob. Perry también participará en la firma ceremonial de la legislación que conferiría al Sistema de la UT establecer la nueva universidad, a la cual se le concedería acceso a los fondos de Permanent Universtity Fund. La Legislatura de Texas ha aprobado el Proyecto de Ley 24 del Senado esta primavera, mismo que el Gob. Perry ha promulgado en junio. Estas firmas ceremoniales representan la oportunidad para los líderes del estado de celebrar con la comunidad del Valle del Río Grande y anunciar nuevos desarrollos en esta histórica gestión.

El Jefe Powell y el Rector Cigarroa discutirán los próximos pasos para la creación de la universidad, incluso el programa y principios rectores.

La ceremonia en UT Pan American presentada por el Rector Robert Nelsen comenzará a las 9:30 de la mañana en la Student Union de UTPA, seguido de la recepción y rueda de prensa.

La segunda ceremonia comenzará a la 1 de la tarde en la universidad de Brownsville, presentada por la Rectora Juliet García, en el TSC Arts Center, seguida de la recepción y rueda de prensa.

Estacionamiento Para la Presa

En UT Pan American, miembros de la prensa se puede estacionar en el estacionamiento Lote A3,  Zona 3 localizado frente al Visitors Center (Edificio de Servicios para Estudiantes).

En UT Brownsville, estacionamiento para la prensa está localizado en el Lot A2 en la calle Taylor, atrás del Auditorio Jacob Brown.
