UTRGV Smart Hospital to be dedicated Wednesday

Medical and academic leaders from The University of Texas System and across the Rio Grande Valley will gather Wednesday (May 28) for the dedication and unveiling of the UT Rio Grande Valley Smart Hospital.

Occupying 15,000 square feet of the Academic and Clinical Research Building on the Harlingen RAHC campus, the UTRGV Smart Hospital is designed to bring together current and future doctors, nurses and allied health professionals from across the Rio Grande Valley to experience high quality, realistic clinical simulation.

The simulation hospital, designed and built using $10 million in funding from the UT System Board of Regents, is equipped with the latest in medical simulation technology. It includes an operating room, a delivery room and astonishingly lifelike computerized mannequins – some of the most advanced in the world - that can do everything from have a heart attack to deliver a baby.

The UTRGV Smart Hospital will be a valuable resource for UTRGV students from a variety of disciplines and will also be an asset to all of South Texas as it will be available to healthcare providers, first-responders, high school students at area health-focused schools and others that can benefit from clinical simulation. State-of-the-art video conferencing technology will allow students and healthcare providers at remote locations to join simulations and discussions.

The event will begin at 10 a.m. with remarks from Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa, M.D., Francisco Fernandez, M.D., founding dean of the UTRGV School of Medicine, and Joseph McCormick, M.D., vice president for South Texas Programs.

A reception will immediately follow the dedication and guests and media will have the opportunity to participate in self-guided tours and interactive simulations throughout the hospital.

The Regional Academic Health Center is located at 2102 Treasure Hills Blvd., Harlingen, Texas, 78550. The event will begin in the RAHC auditorium.
