Chancellors of The University
of Texas System
Until 1950, there was no office of the chancellor.
In the early days of the UT System, the UT Austin president was assigned
some of the duties that would later be assigned to the chancellor, and
various UT Austin offices were relied upon to provide services that
would later be carried out by the UT System.
Based on the various appointments and diverse administrative
arrangements of the 1950s and 1960s, it appears that the Board of Regents
was going through a period of experimenting with administrative structures.
The current structure was not fully in place until the 1970s.
- The position of chancellor was created by the
Board of Regents in 1950, and Dr. James Pinckney Hart
was elected the first chancellor. He served until 1954.
- In 1954, the board named Dr. Logan
Wilson (who had been UT Austin president
since 1953) to be acting chancellor. Later that year, the board abolished
the position of chancellor, but Wilson continued to serve as UT Austin
president until 1960. The regents re-established the position of chancellor
in 1960 and reappointed Wilson to the position. He served as chancellor
until 1961.
- Dr. Harry Huntt Ransom, who had been
named UT Austin president in 1960, was appointed in 1961 to succeed
Wilson as chancellor. He held the position until 1971. From 1963 to
1967, the regents abolished the position of UT Austin president and
Ransom was the chief academic officer of the Austin campus during those
years.
- Dr. Charles A. LeMaistre was chancellor
from 1971 to 1978.
- Mr. E. Don Walker was chancellor from
1978 to 1984.
- Dr. Hans M. Mark was chancellor from
1984 to 1992.
- Dr. William H. Cunningham was chancellor
from 1992 to 2000.
- Mr. R.D. Burck was named interim chancellor
on June 1, 2000. He was named permanent chancellor on December 6, 2000.
He will serve until August 2002.
- Mr. Mark G. Yudof was named chancellor
on June 21, 2002. He will begin service in August 2002.
