AUSTIN – After more than a month of engagement dedicated to soliciting feedback from students, faculty, staff and community members, The University of Texas System Board of Regents unanimously voted Thursday to name the new UT university The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

AUSTIN – Nearly $200 million from the Permanent University Fund will pay for new construction in South Texas for the first time, thanks to action taken by the University of Texas System Board of Regents Thursday.
Regents unanimously voted to appropriate $196 million in PUF funding to construct new facilities in Cameron and Hidalgo counties as part of the UT System initiative to establish a new university and medical school in the Rio Grande Valley.

A campaign to collect community input on a name for the new university in South Texas launches today and will run through Dec. 6.
The University of Texas System Board of Regents will approve the final name, but Regents first want to hear from the South Texas community and especially from students, staff and faculty of UT Brownsville and UT Pan American.

UT System Chancellor Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D. will visit with students, staff and faculty at La Joya High School and UT Pan American Thursday, Oct. 24 to continue conversations about the new university and medical school in South Texas.
Cigarroa’s first stop will be La Joya High School, where he will meet with students and teachers from 10 to 11:15 a.m. to hear their thoughts on educational opportunity in the Rio Grande Valley and what the new UT institution will mean for them. La Joya High School is located at 604 Coyote Dr. in La Joya.

A search advisory committee to assist in selecting the founding president for a new University of Texas in the Rio Grande Valley has been finalized and will begin work immediately.

The Academic Program Working Groups for Project South Texas held a kickoff meeting, Friday, Oct. 4, at The University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg. The meeting was the first important step to combine the academic programs of UT Brownsville and UT Pan American into a new, emerging research institution that will include a school of medicine in the Rio Grande Valley.
