One out of every five Americans lives with a mental illness or behavioral health issue. Mental illness is treatable, and help is available. In recognition of Mental Health Month, we’re highlighting your UT SELECT Medical Plan benefits for behavioral health services. In addition to services available through your institution's Employee Assistance Program (EAP), if you participate in the UT SELECT Medical plan, you can see a network provider in an office setting for a primary care visit copayment of $30 without having to get a preauthorization.

You can locate a network provider through the Blue Cross Blue Shield website, Blue Access for Members. Login and click on the “Doctors and Hospitals” tab at the top of the page, then “Find a Doctor or Hospital”, “Get Medical Care,” and finally “Behavioral Health”. From there you can specify the type of provider you’re looking for. You can also call customer service at (866) 882-2034 for help finding a network provider.

If you seek services in outpatient or inpatient settings, you do need to call Blue Cross at (800) 528-7264 for preauthorization. They can also help you find a network provider, if necessary. Services for inpatient and outpatient settings are subject to your deductible and coinsurance, and inpatient services also incur a $100/day copayment up to $500.

Except in cases of serious mental illness, UT SELECT benefits for behavioral health services are limited to 20 office visits per plan year (9/1 – 8/31) and 30 days per plan year of inpatient care. Individuals diagnosed with a serious mental illness as defined under Texas insurance law are not subject to plan limits for mental health services.

Before you have an appointment, it's always a good idea to speak with your provider or their billing office about how they will work with your insurance.
