David J. Beck


Partner, Beck, Redden & Secrest L.L.P.

David J. Beck, along with Joe Redden and Ron Secrest, founded Beck, Redden & Secrest, L.L.P. in January, 1992. He was formerly a senior partner of Fulbright & Jaworski, L.L.P. in Houston, Texas.

 

David is a very active trial lawyer and has been throughout his professional career. He has been named by the National Law Journal as one of the top 10 trial lawyers in the United States, and one of the top trial lawyers in the Southwest. After a poll of Texas lawyers in 2002, he was listed by the Texas Lawyer as one of the “Go To Lawyers For Lawyers In Trouble.” From November of 2003 – 2010, a statewide survey by Texas Monthly Magazine named him as one of Texas’ “Top 10 Super Lawyers.” He has been named one of "The Best Lawyers in America" by Woodward & White since the inception of the publication in 1990, and is currently one of the few attorneys listed in eight areas of practice. Most recently, the “Best Lawyers” publication named him Houston “2009 Lawyer of the Year” in “Bet-the Company” litigation. Barry D. Burgdorf


Vice Chancellor and General Counsel, The University of Texas System

Barry was appointed Vice Chancellor and General Counsel for the UT System in February 2005. In this role, he manages all of UT System legal affairs and the 33 attorneys within the Office of General Counsel who staff the legal function. Barry also manages the Compliance (including Information Technology Security) and Real Estate functions and serves on the Chancellor's executive management team. Additionally, he works directly with all 15 UT institutions to serve each and their varied legal and business needs. Prior to joining the UT System, Barry was with the Austin office of the law firm of Vinson & Elkins L.L.P. as of counsel from 1998 to 2000 (litigaton) and partner from 2001 to 2005 (corporate and securities transactions) and served as General Counsel to Samsung Austin Semiconductor L.L.C. from 1996-1998.

Steven R. Collins

Associate Vice Chancellor for Governmental Relations and Special Counsel,
The University of Texas System

Steve is the Associate Vice Chancellor for Governmental Relations and Special Counsel to the Office of General Counsel for the UT System. In addition to bridging the two offices on legal matters related to legislation and interactions with other governmental entities, he performs special projects on assignment from the General Counsel. He previously served the System as Interim General Counsel and has also served as Interim Vice Chancellor for Governmental Relations. His legal specialties include Texas constitutional law, administrative law, and parliamentary law. Prior to coming to the System, he was Chief Legislative Counsel and Executive Director of the Texas Legislative Council, a 400+ employee legislative service agency providing nonpartisan legal, research, and information technology services for both houses of the Texas legislature. Simultaneous with his council service, he also served as parliamentarian for the Texas House of Representatives and as General Counsel to the Texas House of Representatives.

Amos N. Guiora


Professor of Law, S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah

Amos N. Guiora is a Professor of Law at the S.J. Quinney College of Law, the University of Utah. Guiora who teaches Criminal Procedure, International Law, Global Perspectives on Counterterrorism and Religion and Terrorism incorporates innovative scenario-based instruction to address national and international security issues and dilemmas. He is a Member of the American Bar Association’s Law and National Security Advisory Committee; a Research Fellow at the International Institute on Counter-Terrorism, The Interdisciplinary Center, Herzylia, Israel; a Corresponding Member, The Netherlands School of Human Rights Research, University of Utrecht School of Law, was awarded a Senior Specialist Fulbright Fellowship for The Netherlands (2008) and research grant from the Stuart Family Foundation (2011). Professor Guiora has published extensively in the U.S. and Europe on issues related to national security, limits of interrogation, religion and terrorism, the limits of power, multiculturalism and human rights. He is the author of numerous articles, op-eds and books; his recent books include Global Perspectives on Counterterrorism, Fundamentals of Counterterrorism, Constitutional Limits on Coercive Interrogation, Freedom from Religion: Rights and National Security, and Homeland Security: What is it and Where are we Going? He served for 19 years in the Israel Defense Forces as Lieutenant Colonel (retired), and held a number of senior command positions, including Commander of the IDF School of Military Law, Legal Advisor to the IDF Home Front Command and Legal Advisor to the Gaza Strip. Professor Guiora received the S.J. Quinney College of Law Faculty Scholarship Award (2011).

William P. Hoye


Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, IES Abroad
(Institute for the International Education of Students)

Bill is executive vice president, general counsel, and chief operating officer of IES Abroad. His responsibilities include final day to day operational decision making authority for the organization; joint oversight responsibility with the CFO of the organization-wide budget process, including recommending the annual budget to the IES Abroad Board of Directors; oversight of IES Abroad’s global strategic planning and annual goals processes; General Counsel and Secretary of the corporation, including serving as chief legal counsel to the organization and overseeing the work of internal and external legal counsel representing IES Abroad in the U.S. and abroad; Chair of the IES Abroad Crisis Management Team with line management responsibility for risk management, insurance, and risk assessment systems and processes; oversight responsibility for the Human Resources Department, Dean of Students Office, Global Real Estate, and the London Residence Hall. He joined IES Abroad in January, 2007.

Barbara B. Miller Communications

Barbara Miller has served over 70 U.S. law firms as a training, coaching and speaking consultant in communication improvement. She has worked with 50 of the AMLaw 200 firms in the U.S. and their non-U.S. based offices and continues to be brought back year after year. Her course topics include "High Impact Presentations" and the "Communication Skills Workshop" emphasizing communications as a strategic tool for career and client development. She has served as the communication consultant to the NITA program at the SMU Law School and has taught a persuasion skills course for the National Practice Institute. With Martin Camp, she has co-authored The Law Firm Associate’s Guide to Connecting with Colleagues, currently available from the Law Practice Management Section of the ABA.

Edgar "Jed" C. Morrison, Jr.

Partner, Jackson Walker L.L.P.

Jed is a partner in the San Antonio office of Jackson Walker L.L.P. Prior to moving to San Antonio, he was Republican Counsel to the U.S. House of Representatives Budget Committee and was later counsel to the Health Care Financing Administration in the Department of Health and Human Services, in Washington, D.C.

 

Jed specializes in the regulatory and transactional aspects of health care law. He has extensive background in Medicare and Medicaid regulatory and reimbursement issues, antitrust, fraud and abuse, physician referral legislation (including recruitment contracts and joint ventures), and managed care issues. In 2000-2001, Jed served as Special Outside Counsel to the Texas Attorney General for managed care matters. His clients include physicians, hospitals, nursing homes, medical equipment suppliers, pharmacies, and other health care providers.

Debra M. Parrish


Parrish Law Offices

Debra is an attorney who has worked with academic medical centers, research institutions, high technology, and start-up companies, particularly those in the life sciences area. Her areas of legal concentration are science law (including scientific misconduct and research regulations, compliance and investigations), health care law, and intellectual property. Debra previously worked at the Office of Research Integrity as an attorney and now counsels journals, institutions, and scientists on matters of research integrity. She is a frequent speaker and author on research integrity issues. She received her JD and BSE in biomedical engineering from Duke University and is a member of the patent bar.

Michael A. Shaunessy

Mike's practice focuses on trial work involving commercial litigation, employment litigation, and suing and defending governmental entities. In the areas of commercial litigation, Mike has brought suit and defended claims involving breach of contract, tortious interference with business relations, fraud and business disparagement. His trial work has also resulted in successful outcomes in cases involving securities fraud and professional liability. For more than 15 years, he has successfully defended employers from claims of sexual harassment, sex discrimination, race discrimination, as well as violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Age Discrimination in Employment Act and the Whistleblower Act. He has successfully defended claims brought against governmental group risk pools, counties, a state university, cities and school districts. He has successfully brought claims against state agencies, including invalidation of contracts and other awards, and has recovered large judgments for entities doing business with the state of Texas.

James D. Spaniolo

President, Professor of Communication, and Professor of Public Affairs
The University of Texas at Arlington

As the University’s seventh president, James D. (Jim) Spaniolo has focused on building and strengthening partnerships and instilling Maverick pride among the students, faculty, staff, and alumni who make up The UT Arlington family.

 

Through this attitude of collaboration and inclusion, he has enhanced UT Arlington’s strong academic quality to meet today’s global needs – and beyond. Over the next 10 years, UT Arlington aims to become a major national research university and have highly rated academic programs in every one of its nine academic colleges and schools.

 

President Spaniolo is emphasizing engagement both in and out of the classroom, leading to a more well-rounded university experience. Under his leadership, UT Arlington has seen dramatic increases in student organizational involvement, leadership opportunities, cultural events, community service activities, and new infrastructure.

 

Before coming to UT Arlington in February 2004, President Spaniolo was dean of Michigan State University’s College of Communication Arts and Sciences. As dean from 1996-2003, he oversaw an enrollment increase of more than 1,000 students and helped establish the James H. and Mary B. Quello Center for Telecommunication Management and Law by raising more than $3.5 million. He was also a professor in the School of Journalism and taught courses on the First Amendment and communications law.

 

He graduated with high honors from Michigan State with a B.A. degree in political science. He earned a law degree from The University of Michigan Law School and a master’s degree in public administration from The University of Michigan Institute of Public Policy Studies (now the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy).

William H. Shute


Vice Chancellor for Federal Affairs, The University of Texas System

Since September 2001, Bill has been Vice Chancellor for Federal Relations with the University of Texas System, one of the nation's largest higher education systems with 15 campuses and an annual operating budget of $13.1 billion (FY 2012). In his role as Vice Chancellor, he is responsible for all UT System and campus activities in Washington, D.C. and manages a staff of ten System employees. Under Bill's supervision, the Office of Federal Relations is charged with increasing the amount of federal research and development performed by the UT System, reviewing and advocating federal policy, and managing a multi-campus undergraduate fellowship program. UT campuses have attracted more than $586 million in new federal research money through a process established by Bill.

 

Bill has spent his professional career working in the federal policy arena and his entire personal life in federal politics. Before joining the UT System, he spent eleven years as Executive Director – Federal Relations for SBC Telecommunications, Inc. He has also worked as Senior Vice President in the government relations firm R. Duffy Wall & Associates, a legislative assistant for a Member of Congress, and a telecom trade association attorney.

 

Bill was Legislative Assistant to former Member of Congress Bob Whittaker and was responsible for several Commerce Committee and Judiciary Committee issues. Joining Whittaker’s staff was a natural decision. Bill ’s father served 16 years as campaign manager and district office director for Whittaker’s predecessor, Joe Skubitz.
