Barry D. Burgdorf |
Barry Burgdorf was appointed Vice Chancellor and General Counsel for the UT System in February 2005. In this role, he manages all of UT System legal affairs and the 36 attorneys within the Office of General Counsel who staff the legal function. Barry also manages the Compliance (including Information Technology Security) and Real Estate functions and serves on the Chancellor's executive management team. Additionally, he works directly with all 15 UT institutions to serve each and their varied legal and business needs. Barry is responsible for UT's relationships with the Office of the Attorney General and other state and federal agencies on legal issues and oversees all outside counsel for UT System and UT institutions.
Barry was formerly with the Austin office of the law firm of Vinson & Elkins L.L.P. as of counsel from 1998 to 2000 and partner from 2001 to 2005 where his practice included private equity and venture capital financing, mergers and acquisitions, securities offerings, regulation and compliance, joint ventures and strategic partnerships, and general corporate governance. He served as General Counsel of Samsung Austin Semiconductor L.L.C. from 1996-1998. As Samsung’s first General Counsel, Barry organized their legal department and then managed its operations. Prior to his position as General Counsel at Samsung Austin, Barry spent 6 years in the Austin office of Vinson & Elkins as a business litigator focusing his practice on antitrust matters, securities fraud defense, telecom industry disputes and other complex federal court litigation.
Barry was elected to the American Law Institute in 2007 and named in Nightingale's Healthcare News' annual listing of outstanding in-house counsel in 2006. When he was in private practice, Texas Monthly has twice named Barry a “Texas Super Lawyer.” Barry received the 2011 Magna Stella award from the Texas General Counsel Forum for legal leadership and management in the nonprofit/government company category.
Barry is a graduate of The University of Texas at Austin (BBA in finance and international business, 1985; JD with honors, 1990). He received his MBA from Southern Methodist University in 1986. His professional and community activities include: Member, Board of Regents, Concordia University Texas (2004-present); Member, American Law Institute; Sustaining Life Fellow, Texas Bar Foundation; Master, Austin IP Inn of Court; Past Chairman and Member, Board of Governors and Executive Committee, Lifeworks (2002-2011); Chairman of the Board and President, Bethany Lutheran Church (2004-2009); Member, Board of Directors, Leadership Austin (2006-2007); Member, Leadership Austin Class (2002-2003); American Heart Association Executive Leadership Team for the Austin Heart Ball, Chair (2011-2012), Committee Member (2010-2011).
