Eligible employees receive $20 per month for every two years of lifetime service credit, up to and including 42 years of service.

Part Time Employees

Employees appointed to work a minimum of 20 hours per week (but less than full-time) for at least four and 1/2 months are eligible for insurance. Leave is earned in proportion to the percentage of time appointed to work.

Retirement Plans

  • Teacher Retirement System (TRS): All employees must contribute to TRS unless ORP is selected. This defined benefit plan provides retirement benefits to eligibel UT System employees. Benefits are based on age, years of service, and final average salary at retirement. See the TRS Benefits Handbook for more information on this valuable benefit.
  • Optional Retirement Program (ORP): The ORP may be chosen by certain employees in lieu of TRS based on the job they perform. This program is a defined contribution plan governed by Internal Revenue Code Section 403(b). Benefits are based on the performance of the investments selected and are controlled by the employee. You are vested after one year and one day of participation with a right to both employee and employer contributions.

There are significant differences between the ORP and TRS. Please see An Overview of TRS and ORPprovided by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for a comprehensive review of these differences.
  • UTSaver Tax Sheltered Annuities (TSA): Voluntary participation in this 403(b) plan allows employees to make tax deferred contributions to supplement their state retirement benefits.
  • UTSaver Defered Compensation Plan (DCP): Voluntary participation in a 457(b) plan allows employees to make tax deferred contributions to supplement their state retirement benefits.
