Crime Prevention Tips

  1. During the workday, please keep your purses, wallets, and other valuable personal items out of sight. Place them in a locked location such as a closet, file cabinet, or desk drawer.
  2. Never leave unattended keys on your desk or in accessible desk drawers.
  3. When not in use, keep notebook/laptop computers out of sight and secured, especially after hours.
  4. If you must leave and you are the only person in your office area, close and lock the door, even if you are only going to be gone a few minutes. Most thefts occur in a matter of seconds.
  5. When using an elevator, respond to your instinct, intuition, or initial reactions. Do not get in to an elevator with someone who makes you feel uneasy. Exit the elevator immediately if someone enters who makes you feel uneasy.
  6. When possible, stand next to the control panel so that you have easy access to the buttons.
  7. In your vehicle, keep all packages, bags and other items out of sight. Thieves scan the interiors of parked vehicles for items to steal.
  8. When walking to your car, be aware of your surroundings - occupied vehicles near yours or anyone loitering in the immediate area. Return to your office or an occupied area if you feel uneasy. Request assistance from a System complex guard.
  9. When walking to your vehicle, have your car keys in your hand, with the door key ready for immediate use.
  10. Visually inspect the interior of the vehicle before entering. Make sure no one is hiding on the back seat or rear floorboard.
  11. Lock the doors immediately after entering your vehicle.
  12. Remotely located intersections controlled by signal lights and/or stop signs are favorite places for would-be attackers. Be observant of people approaching your vehicle. Drive away if someone walks directly toward your vehicle. Do not lower the window to talk to someone
  13. If you are in a remote location and your vehicle is struck from behind by another vehicle causing only minor damage, remain in your locked vehicle. If you are approached by the other driver, advise him/her to call the police or both of you can drive to a populated area and notify the police. Do not lower the window or get out of the car to talk with the other driver. Get the license plate number of the other vehicle if you can do so without exiting your vehicle.

As unfortunate as it may be, we live in a society in which the above information may prove to be of value.
