Fire System Shutdown Procedure

 

Procedure

This document establishes the procedures to be followed when a fire system is required to be impaired at The University of Texas System.

An impairment is any situation in which all or part of a fire system (sprinklers, standpipes, smoke detectors, alarms, panels and water supply) is turned off or otherwise temporarily rendered inoperable.

 

Notification/Coordination/Authorization

The following individuals must be notified prior to any Fire System impairment:

  • The University of Texas at Austin Electronics Shop Supervisor, 512.471.9254
  • The University of Texas System Facilities Manager, 512.499.4736
  • The Office of Risk Management Environmental Health & Safety Coordinator, 512.322.3740

Facilities Management in accordance with The Environmental Health and Safety section of the Office of Risk Management submit and approve all Fire System Impairment requests through the Service Order System (SOS).

The University of Texas at Austin Electronic Shop utilizes an internal system for ensuring that impaired systems are returned for service.

Facilities Management in accordance with the Environmental Health and Safety section of The Office of Risk Management will determine the appropriate interim life safety measures and specify those on the SOS request form. Department Safety Liaisons (DSLs) in accordance with The University of Texas System guards may assist with a fire watch. Only UT Austin Electronic Shop personnel are permitted to impair any part of a fire system. In an emergency, Facilities Management or ORM have this authority.
