Hot Work Procedure

Purpose

This document establishes the procedures to be followed when welding, cutting or conducting other open flame work at The University of Texas System.

Welding, Cutting & other open flame work

Any work involving welding, cutting and open flame work requires a Hot Work Permit and the associated inspection and fire protection measures. Hot Work includes grinding, soldering or other activities that can start a fire.

Procedure

Facilities Management in accordance with The Environmental Health and Safety section of the Office of Risk Management:

  • Receives and approves Hot Work requests submitted on the Service Order System (SOS)
  • Determines appropriate permit length and frequency of inspections

A separate SOS request must be submitted if a Fire System Impairment is required. The individual submitting the Fire System Impairment form must specify who is responsible for coordinating the impairment with U.T. Austin Fire shop (electronic shop).
